Why hydration is important in Cats

Why hydration is important in Cats

Hydration: Essential for urinary health

Like all animals, cats need water. A normal 4.5-5Kg cat should ideally be drinking around 250 to 300ml of water per day, or around 1/2 a pint of water. More active breeds like Maine Coon or Bengal cats may need even more!

Why Cats May Not Drink Enough Water

Cats often don't drink as much as they should as they naturally have a low thirst drive. In the wild, they'd get a large proportion of their daily needs from prey. An unlikely scenario in a domestic cat, especially when fed with a dry diet. This lack of water can lead to urinary health problems later in life.

Why you should consider a Water Fountain

A cat water fountain can be a fantastic addition to your feline friend's environment for several reasons:

  • Instinct: In the wild, cats seek out moving water sources like streams and rivers. These natural sources are less likely to be stagnant and contaminated, making them safer to drink.
  • Freshness: The constant flow of water helps keep it fresher and cleaner than a still bowl, by reducing the risk of bacterial growth.
  • Filtered water: The Fussy Cat fountain has a 6-stage built-in filter that removes impurities and contaminants from the water, providing your cat with a healthier drinking source.
  • Playfulness: Some cats just enjoy playing with running water, which can increase their water intake.
  • Accessibility: Our fountain lets your cat drink from a sitting position. Ideal for older or a more timid cat as it lets them observe their surroundings whilst drinking.

How to Encourage Your Cat to Drink More Water

  • Fresh, clean water: Ensure your cat always has access to fresh, clean water.
  • Multiple water sources: Place fountains and water bowls in different areas of your home to encourage your cat to drink more.
  • Running water: Some cats prefer the sound and movement of running water. The Fussy Cat fountain has a sensor that activates when a cat passes.
  • Wet food: Incorporate more wet food into your cat's diet, as it contains a higher moisture content.
  • Keep food and water separated: Cats don't like to eat and drink in the same place. Keep their food and water separate.

Why is water so important for cats?

Just like humans, cats need water to survive. It's essential for various bodily functions, including:

  • Digestion: Water helps break down food and aids in nutrient absorption.
  • Temperature regulation: It helps to maintain a healthy body temperature.
  • Waste elimination: Water is crucial for kidney function and helps flush out toxins.
  • Joint health: Proper hydration helps lubricate joints and prevent stiffness.

Kidney Health and Hydration

One of the most significant reasons for keeping your cat well-hydrated is to promote urinary health. It's difficult to give an exact percentage of cats that suffer from urinary health issues, as it can vary depending on factors like breed, diet, and lifestyle. However, it's safe to say that it's a relatively common problem, affecting a significant portion of the feline population.
